About Mocha Ware

So called, because of dendritic character, forming tree-like patterns. The word 'Mocha' originates from the agate stone common to the Red Sea area. The Mocha technique was first introduced during the 1780s at the Staffordshire Potteries. To this day, there are few potters in the British Isles persuing this technique.

Using small amounts of acidic liquid and carefully dropping these tiny amounts into the alkaline slip form the unique design. The resulting chemical reaction causes the infinite variety of patterns formed by capillary action.

The acidic solution called 'Tea', consists originally of tobacco juices, hops, herbs etc. Adding coloured oxides to the 'Tea' produces the colours. The angle at which the pot is held, and the manner of application controls which sort of pattern will be achieved.

The tree design is made on a blue or beige background.
